The weather is starting to warm up and that means the Lady Eagles Softball team is heating up the field. Last night, the ladies faced off against the 2017 State Champion team, The Colony, and the Lady Eagles came out swinging. The game was fairly evenly matched leading into the fourth inning. It was all tied up at 4-4, until The Colony went ahead 5-4 in the 5th. But it was all Prosper in the 6th, as the Lady Eagles rallied and put 5 runs on the board!
Their were a few close home runs, and Prosper took a 7-5 lead with a double by Avery Colclaser (#10) and a 2 run bomb by Bailey Zornes (#13) to end with 6th inning with Prosper in the lead 9-5. The ladies defeated the reigning 5A state champs, bumping them to seat #1 in the first poll of the season and a record of 15-5 according to Sports Day High School. Rachel Eckrote (#5) was awarded the win, throwing a total of 126 pitches in 7 innings.
Some outstanding players from the game include: senior pitcher Rachel Eckrote (#5) with 16 strike outs, senior Bailey Zornes (#13) with a home run, senior 2nd baseman Avery Colclaser (#10) with a double, and senior Skylar Phillips (#43) with a close-call home run.
The Lady Eagles have two more games to conclude the first round of district play and are currently 5-0 in district 14-5A. There are only nine games left until the ladies move into the playoffs. Prosper will take on Carrollton Creekview on Friday, March 23 on Creekview turf at 7:00pm.
“I want them to enjoy the victory from last night, but tomorrow you have to get back to work. We have our goals set of what we want, and in order to get that we have to continue to work hard every day,” said head coach Staci Jackson.
