With temperatures expected to be on the mild side and no rain, the forecast for attendance at the ninth annual Prosper Fishing Derby is another record setter. The highly-popular event always brings out kids, parents and grandparents to cast a line, catch some trout and win some prizes. This year, no preliminary registration is required.
With a projected weather outlook of partly cloudy skies and a high temperature of 72 degrees, the ninth annual Prosper Fishing Derby, scheduled for Feb. 24, promises to be another record-breaker.
Welcoming anglers up to 14 years of age with no preliminary registration required, the Derby takes place at the Frontier Park pond. This event has become a favorite with Prosper families, featuring a morning of fishing from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. and loads of prizes for kids ages 14. Attendance records have been steadily surpassed over the last few years.
The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) has once again granted the Town of Prosper an exemption to the fishing license and stamp requirement for the duration of the Fishing Derby for those who fish or volunteer for the event. The pond will be stocked in advance by the TPWD with mostly rainbow trout. The Derby is a catch-and-keep event for trout only, with a limit of five per person. Derby officials encourage catch-and-release for other species.
“It’s refreshing to see families outdoors enjoying fishing together at the park,” says Julie Shivers, Recreation Services Coordinator. “This event is a great opportunity to get kids outdoors in February.”
As always, the annual Prosper Fishing Derby is made possible by businesses and organizations who sponsor the event in various ways. For more information about sponsorships, businesses or interested individuals are encouraged to contact Shivers at email@example.com or by calling 972-569-1068.
The Derby is part of the year-round schedule of events presented or supported by the Prosper Parks and Recreation Department to promote the active use of community parks.
Additional 2018 events include the Mayor’s Coffee and the Mayor’s Luncheon, the Prosper Community Picnic and the Prosper Christmas Festival. Classes and camps for children and adults are offered throughout the year. A full listing of Town recreation programs can be obtained at www.ProsperParksandRec.org.
