Residents eligible for Parks and Recreation Scholarships
Prosper families who may be facing the prospect of keeping their children from attending summer camp because of a shortage of funds, either temporarily because of the COVID-19 pandemic or because of other reasons, are encouraged to apply for grants from the Prosper Parks and Recreation Scholarship Program.
The scholarship program, adopted and endorsed by the Parks and Recreation Board, is designed to provide grants that cover the costs of attending any of the summer camps offered by the Town. While the grants are non-competitive, they do require that families fill out an application which includes a statement regarding their financial situation. Applying families are not required to provide documentation, and the applications are strictly confidential.
Specific language in the program now addresses families who are facing financial hardships related to the COVID-19 pandemic. “We encourage every resident who needs help to apply for a scholarship,” said Dudley Raymond, Director of Parks and Recreation. “It’s our sincere wish that every child who wants to attend summer camp this year will be able to do so.”
Scholarship applications are available in English and Spanish and are posted at www.prosperparksandrec.org and www.prospertx.gov. Copies can also be picked up at the Parks and Recreation Administration Building, 409 E. First Street. The program is only open to Prosper residents.
Among the camps offered by the Parks and Recreation Department this summer, some of which have already begun, are most of the popular sports, STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics), Engineering for Kids, Bricks4Kidz, and Magic Camp. A complete list of camps and descriptions, dates, times, and locations, is available at http://www.prosperparksandrec.org.
Established in 2018, the Prosper Parks and Recreation Scholarship Program is funded by donations received at the time of registration as well as proceeds from the Kids’ Christmas Shoppe, open during the annual Prosper Christmas Festival. All proceeds from gift sales are designated for the fund. The 2020 festival, which will include the popular Shoppe, is scheduled for Saturday, December 5 on the grounds of Prosper Town Hall, 250 E. First St.
