The seventh annual Spring Clean Up and Recycling event is set for Saturday, March 24 and, like last year, it will be held along Craig Road, between First Street and Preston Road.
The drive-through, drop-off collection program has gained popularity every year it’s been held, initially on Main Street near Town Hall. The move to the Craig Road location, with the drop-off zone situated almost directly in front of Judy Rucker Elementary School, was caused by the construction of the new Town Hall. Free to all Prosper residents, the event starts at 8:00 a.m. and continues until noon, rain or shine.
“In many ways, the Craig Road location is a better fit for us,” says Kelly Vanaman, Utility Billing Administrator. “We haven’t decided to make the change permanent, but the advantages of the easy-to-get-to entry point at Broadway Street and the efficient exit onto Preston Road are hard to ignore.”
Participants will be required to have a current Prosper water bill and driver’s license to verify their eligibility. Drivers will enter the zone at the intersection of Broadway Street and Craig Road. From there, they’ll proceed south along Craig Road to First Street where they will check in and present their identification. “Cars and trucks drive up to the dumpsters, unload their trash and recycling, and proceed toward Preston Road,” she said. Among the items accepted are scrap lumber, large pieces of furniture, mattresses, box springs, and other large or bulky household items. However, tires, roofing, gravel, or other construction waste will not be accepted.
In addition, recycling bins will be available for computers, electronic equipment, servers, monitors, printers, phone systems, production equipment, components and cables. The recycling program will accept washing machines, clothes dryers, stoves, microwaves, and other appliances. Refrigerators, however, must be tagged by a certified technician with a label indicating that the Freon has been completely removed. Usable items such as clothing and furniture can be donated to the Cornerstone Assistance Center, which will have a collection truck at the event. Prosper Lions Club members will be accepting eyeglasses for their sight restoration program.
Hazardous household waste (HHW) will not be accepted on March 24. After obtaining a voucher from Prosper Utility Billing, residents can discard their HHW such as paint in liquid form, thinners, paint strippers, lawn and garden chemicals, fertilizers, etc. at the Frisco Environmental Collection Center, 6616 Walnut St. in Frisco. The center is open on Wednesdays from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. and on Saturdays from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
Vouchers are available at Town Hall during regular business hours. Certain residency requirements must be met to obtain a voucher. Further information on this event can be obtained by calling the Utility Billing Department at 972-346-2640 or Waste Connections at 469-452-8000.
